Streaming Strings: By The Numbers

By Matt Wickstrom

Billy Strings, Streaming Strings, Nashville

With over 150 different songs performed across nine shows spread throughout Nashville, Billy Strings’ ‘Streaming Strings’ summer tour was one for the ages, and not just due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19. From the most played songs to the guests with the most sit-ins, below is a look at ‘Streaming Strings’ by the numbers.

  • “While I’m Waiting Here” the first song to be played two and three times, reaching the occasions on July 23 at City Winery and July 24 at Exit/In during the band’s second set in which they played through String’s album Turmoil & Tinfoil from start to finish with fiddler John Mailander. Also hitting the Streaming Strings three-peat later that same night was “Pyramid Country,” which later became the first song to hit four plays on the tour during the July 26 show at 3rd & Lindsley, with the occasion also marking the first song during that show with special guest Anders Beck.
  • John Mailander was by far the guest with the most sit-ins throughout the tour, performing the entirety of the July 24 and 25 shows, totaling 41 songs, leaps and bounds ahead of Bryan Sutton, who sat in on July 19 at the Station Inn for nine songs.
  • Billy loves him some traditional grass! Of the artists covered throughout the tour, Bill Monroe had the most individual songs covered with 19 between himself and Bill Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys. Following Monroe were the Stanley Brothers (11), traditional covers (eight) and Flatt & Scruggs and Doc Watson (seven each).
  • In total, 57 different artists’ songs were covered throughout the ‘Streaming Strings’ tour for a total of 121 individual songs. As a percentage, covers made up for just over 78% of the 152 different songs performed during the tour.
  • The tour averaged roughly 21 songs per show, with the high mark coming in a tie between the tour’s two shows at the Station Inn on July 18 and 19, which each featured shows containing 27 songs. As a result, the Station Inn also took the top spot among all venues hosting ‘Streaming Strings’ with 54 songs total, beating out the Exit/In, which in total saw 41 songs performed inside it’s walls for an average of just over 20 songs per night.
