LISTEN: OTTO shares alt-country anthem “Mirrors”

By Matt Wickstrom

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Led by Lexington musical veteran Otto Helmuth, OTTO the band today shares alt-country anthem “Mirrors,” the latest single from the vault.

OTTO the band played together as Slo-Fi for years prior to rebranding in 2018, the same year their released their full-length of the same name. “Mirrors” was recorded during the same time the band recorded the album, done at Barrick Recording in Glasgow prior to later being mastered at Helmuth’s home studio in Lexington.

“Mirrors” features a hard-driving, alt-country edge to it reminiscent of bands such as the Old 97’s, Uncle Tupelo and the Bottle Rockets, no surprise given Helmuth’s upbringing and touring history. Of the song, Helmuth says that it is “an honest tune about living forward and giving up on vanity with a hard look at self growth, adding that he and the band were aiming for the “vein of iconic roots rock, Keith Richards-style Some Girls-era rock ‘n roll.”

Listen to “Mirrors” below.

Many will recognize Helmuth from his run during the 90s with The Blueberries, who opened for the likes of Uncle Tupelo, Alex Chilton and Yo la Tango. The Blueberries disbanded in 2000 after releasing four full-length albums. However, Helmuth hasn’t slowed his involvement in the scene, having recorded at his home studio acts such as The Apples in Stereo, Bill Doss, Paul K and the Weatherman, Justin Wells, Warren Byron, Italian Beaches, Bear Medicine and many others, in addition to helping with many soundtracks for various independent filmmakers over the years.

OTTO the band is Otto Helmuth (guitar/vocals), Chad Ward (bass), Tim Welch (drums/vocals) and Joshua Wright (Guitar vocals). Additionally, Lexingtonian Willie Eames laid down a steamy guitar solo for “Mirrors.”

Catch the band in action this weekend in Monticello at the Master Musicians Festival Campout at Hidden Ridge (May 18) alongside Smooth Hound Smith and Nicholas Jamerson. Then on May 25 the band will be back in action at Cosmic Charlie’s in Lexington with Alcatraz Shakedown and Of the Dell.
