LEXINGTON, Ky. — This week a pair of multi-instrumentalists and two of Lexington’s busiest musicians, Maggie Lander and J. Tom Hnatow, joined me for Wick’s Picks on Lexington Community Radio.
Lander, a singer-songwriter, guitarist and fiddle player can often be seen around town performing solo or with The Rooster’s Crow, George Moulton, io Ravine and Alma Gitana, among others. She discussed all of those projects and more over the airwaves (36:40–1:18:00), specifically the September release of her solo EP Old Flame along with influences, songwriting and more. We also listen to “Painkiller” off of Old Flame.
Following Lander was J. Tom Hnatow (1:25:40–2:03:28), a musician, producer and engineer who works with Duane Lundy at Shangri-la Productions and has spent much of 2018 touring with Astoria, Oregon-based indie rock outfit Horse Feathers in support of their new album Appreciation. We discuss with Hnatow his musical background, foray into not only being a live musician but a studio musician as well, working with Lander on her latest EP and much more. We also listen to music from Vandaveer and Horse Feathers, two bands Hnatow has spent considerable time playing and touring with.
Lander and Hnatow also sat in and provided input on one another’s interviews, with Hnatow discussing the male-dominated nature of the music industry, among other topics. This week’s show also featured a wide collection of music from Kentucky artists including The Wooks, Wayne Graham, Joslyn & The Sweet Compression, Magnolia Boulevard, Nick Dittmeier & The Sawdusters, Driftwood Gypsy, Chelsea Nolan, Grayson Jenkins and John R. Miller.
