Wick’s Picks: Ep. 37 – 9/24/18 (w/ Lylak and Sean Whiting)

By Matt Wickstrom

Gideon Maki of Lylak

LEXINGTON, Ky. — This week on Wick’s Picks on Lexington Community Radio host Matt Wickstrom was joined by Gideon Maki of indie rock outfit Lylak and soulful, Paintsville-based singer-songwriter Sean Whiting.

First on the program was Gideon Maki (0:00–1:02:12) to discuss his musical roots, Lylak’s origins, recording experiences, projects on the horizon and much more. Maki also performed stripped-down versions of “Gabriel” and “Start Again,” two tracks on the band’s 2017 self-titled EP along with a sampling of the album versions of the EP’s other two tracks “Someone Who Cares” and “Virginia.”

Sean Whiting

Following Maki was Sean Whiting (1:02:13–2:02:18) to discuss musical comparisons between himself and Chris Stapleton along with stories from when the two were growing up in the Paintsville area together; the transition into pursuing music as a full-time career, songwriting, his upcoming sophomore album and much more. Whiting also performed two songs live — “Harvest the Moon” off his upcoming record and “Hey There” off of 2017’s Finally… The Beginning.

Listen to an archive of the show below.

Tune in live to Wick’s Picks on Lexington Community Radio every Monday from 9-11 a.m. on the dial at 93.9 FM and online at lexingtoncommunityradio.org. Next week songwriters Donnie Bowling and Brett Horton join the program on October 1.
